Teenager Accused of Murdering Lauderdale Lakes Grandmother for $34

A 16 year old boy stabbed his 62 year old neighbor to death and then stole $34 from her purse. The teenager is being detained at the Broward County Juvenile Assessment Center in Fort Lauderdale.

A teenager broke into his neighbor’s apartment, stabbed her repeatedly and robbed her — for $34, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Vibbins Williams’ granddaughter found the 62-year-old woman barely breathing and lying in a pool of blood in the 4800 block of Northwest 24th Court about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The granddaughter, who was not identified, called 911 and paramedics took Williams to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where she died.

Detectives charged Williams’ 16-year-old neighbor with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Juvenile Assessment Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Sun Sentinel is not identifying the teen because of his age.

The youth confessed to stabbing Williams, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Source; South Florida Sun Sentinel …

Below is an excerpt from the Pre-Trial Service Division at the Broward County Sheriffs Office / Broward County Court…

The process begins with the program’s Interview and Investigation Unit, which screens and interviews defendants for release consideration based on stringent criteria. Specialists conduct personal interviews prior to the magistrate process, verify and confirm background information through a number of databases and provide judges with relevant information to assist in the release and detention decisions. Defendants who are deemed qualified for release are recommended to the magistrate court judge for consideration. If granted release, defendants are then placed into one of BSO’s Supervision Programs, where they are required to abide by stringent program and special court-ordered conditions and are held accountable for their behavior and compliance.

Those three levels include the Standard Supervision Program, Intermediate Supervision and Electronic Monitoring/House Arrest Unit.

The Standard Supervision Program monitors the activities of felony and misdemeanor defendants via telephone check-in, office and home visits and court reminder letters. Defendants are held accountable to abide by all release conditions and special conditions of the court to include counseling, urinalysis and any number of other requirements.

The Intermediate Supervision Unit conducts supervision of defendants through more frequent contact. Full-time employment is required and verified. Defendants requiring assistance are referred to Community based programs.

The Electronic Monitoring/House Arrest Program offers the most intensive form of supervision. Defendants are placed on a curfew and are allowed to leave the confines of the residence only when authorized by specialists. This unit uses the most advanced methods of enforcement, including radio frequency tracking, remote alcohol testing and drive-by monitoring, active and passive GPS. Defendants are monitored 24 hours per day. Source; Sherriff.org

Pastors Support Bondsmen in Florida

For the past few weeks, the message heard from pulpits across Volusia County has been one of surrender.

But the 12 to 15 members of the clergy aren’t just preaching the need to give up sinful ways. The surrender they are advocating is aimed at people who have managed to avoid arrest on warrants that have been issued for them. They want them to surrender and resolve the criminal matters.

To make that happen, they are staging Operation Safe Surrender from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Friendship Baptist Church at 539 George W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach.

What started as a Daytona Beach project has become a countywide event, and there are indications that wanted people from across Central Florida are going to take advantage of the opportunity, said the Rev. L. Ronald Durham, pastor at Greater Friendship.

The event is patterned after similar operations staged across the country by the U.S. Marshals Service and was proposed by Daytona Beach police Sgt. Jimmy Floyd, who has been working for more than a year to make it happen, Durham said.

It is thought to be the first time local law-enforcement authorities have had such an event in Florida, and organizers have no idea what to expect.

“I don’t know if we’re going to get one or going to get a thousand,” Durham said.

If every phone inquiry about Operation Safe Surrender means someone will show up, there will be a good turnout.

“The offenders are not calling,” Durham said. They are having someone else call to check out the details. “I don’t think we’ll be able to limit it to Volusia County,” he said. That’s because the calls are coming from as far away as Orlando and Melbourne.

The state attorney for the 7th Judicial Circuit, which includes Volusia, Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns counties, said he strongly supports the effort.

“We will be evaluating the operation for possible implementation in other counties within the 7th Circuit,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said.

Those wanted for nonviolent crimes will be able to surrender at the church, appear before a judge by closed-circuit television and be released.

Some offenders facing charges for violent crimes and serious felonies may not get to go home, but prosecutors and judges may go lighter on them because they surrendered, Durham said. A bail bondsmen will be standing by to help those who need to post bail, he said.

Although his church took the lead, the response from other churches on both the west and east sides of Volusia County has been tremendous, he said. Both predominantly African-American and predominantly white churches, all representing a wide range of faiths, are participating, he said. Members of the various churches are volunteering to work at the event, Durham said.

Pastors in Volusia say it’s time for offenders to surrender

Durham, who said he and other pastors will be on hand to provide encouragement for those who show up, isn’t sure his sermons reached those who need to surrender. But there is a good chance their mothers and grandmothers were sitting in the congregation, and they are the ones who can make the right thing happen, he said…source orlando sentinel.com

Mitch Bail BondsHELP YOUR FRIENDS BY SPREADING THIS VERY IMPORTANT TIP  VIA EMAIL, FACEBOOK AND TWITTER

Tonight, at 12:01 a.m. eastern (Saturday morning), Facebook will make it possible to create a customized link for your profile – affectionately known around the tech world as a vanity URL.

Right now, your Facebook URL appears something like this:

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=123456789

After you modify your URL (I’ll show you how), you’ll have a much more clean-looking Facebook address, such as:

http://www.facebook.com/cglynch.

.

Twitter and LinkedIn have had this capability for quite some time. On those two services, you simply go to your account settings to modify it. But on Facebook, the capability has not been made available – until 12:01 a.m. eastern this Saturday.

It will be interesting to see if Facebook’s core user base stumbles back early from the bars or stays in altogether tonight to snag their URL of choice. Not everyone will stay up for this privilege. But if you are in front of a computer at that time, log onto Facebook and then point your browser to www.facebook.com/username/.

According to a blog post by Facebook, you will be prompted to choose a username. Facebook may suggest some options (see screen shot below), or you can create your own if it’s still available. If you have a “Joe Smith” type of name, you should try and get onto Facebook as close to the 12:01 a.m. time as possible.

Your username for the vanity URL must be at least five characters long and be all alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9).

A word of caution: Don’t go for anything funny or cute. Play it straight. According to Facebook, “Once it’s been selected, you won’t be able to change or transfer it.”

Owner of Chimp Who Attacked Woman Won’t Face Criminal Charges

Earlier this year, Travis the chimpanzee made headlines for attacking a woman unprovoked, ripping off her nose, hands, lips, and eyelids. She was left blind with multiple other injuries. The woman’s attorneys had filed a $50 million lawsuit against the chimp’s owner, but prosecutors announced in December that the owner will not face criminal charges.

An attorney for the state of Connecticut said there is nothing to indicate that the 200-pound chimp’s owner knew the animal was dangerous and ignored that danger. The chimp was reportedly shot and killed by police. Prior to the incident this year, the animal had escaped from his owner’s car in 2003 and led police on a chase for several hours.

Wildlife experts say the incident should serve as a reminder that chimps are unpredictable and unsuitable as pets. Source; USAToday.com, December 2009

Lee County woman accused of acting as an illegal bailbondsman

Florida Bail Bond News

A Lee County woman said she could help get two men released from jail on bond, but couldn’t legally work as a bondsman. She also was fired from a florida bail bond company once the owner found she had a criminal background.

Judith Delosreyes, 28, who lists addresses of the 27000 block of Pinecrest Lane, Bonita Springs and the 9000 block of San Carlos Boulevard in Fort Myers, was charged Thursday with grand theft and acting as a bail bond agent without a license. On Friday she remained in Lee County Jail pending posting of a total of $10,000 in bonds. She has several aliases including Judith De Los Reys, Vanessa Delosreyes, Judith Da Ramirez, Judith Delos Reyes and Judith Ramirez.

Delosreyes also was fired from Second Chance Bail Bonds on Fowler Street in Fort Myers when the owner found out she had a criminal background check. On Oct. 13, Onil Martinez told Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies she was employed by the last of Ramirez from Aug. 15 through Sept. 15, 2008, and she had been referring people to him for bonds.

According to an arrest report:

Jessica Ayala said on Sept. 16, her two younger brothers, David Chavarria, 22, and Luis Chavarria, 19, both of the 9200 block of King Road, San Carlos Park, were in jail a woman — Delosreyes “claimed that she worked for a bail bonds company and would arrange to bail Luis Chavarria out for $200. Ayala and Elizabeth Mejia, who was dating the younger brother, gave Delosreyes the money. The next day she said she needed $300 more and the money was provided.

On. Sept. 18, Ayala was told her brother would be released from jail, however later that day, she learned neither brother had bonds posted.

Ayala called the woman several times to no avail until Sept. 22. Delosreyes said she would return the money, but never did.

Luis Chavarria was released from jail on Oct. 24, while his brother remains jailed.

Mejia and Martinez chose Delosreyes from a photo lineup. Naples News.com

Bondsman surrenders in slaying of fugitive

A bail bondsman surrendered Thursday to face a charge of criminal homicide in the fatal shooting of an unarmed fugitive during a confrontation in a North Side house.

Mark Smith, 37, of the North Side, was accompanied by his attorney when he surrendered at 7:45 p.m. at the Municipal Courts Building, Downtown. He was charged in the death of Michael Robinson, a former Ross resident.

Robinson, 38, died of a shotgun wound to the pelvis. He was shot Dec. 23 during a confrontation with Smith at a home on Rising Main Avenue.

Smith’s partner, Anthony McKay, 31, of Brookline, has not been charged.

“I’m surprised … that it’s a single charge of homicide as opposed to a specific count of manslaughter,” said attorney Michael DeRiso, who represents Smith, adding that his client is “upset” that charges were filed.

Smith was arraigned yesterday in Night Court before District Judge Armand Martin and was released after posting 10 percent of a $25,000 bond. A hearing was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday in City Court.

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning has issued a gag order in the case, authorities said.

DeRiso previously stated that Smith fired a rubber bullet at Robinson.

“He never intended to kill anybody,” DeRiso said at the time. “The bullets he used are for non-deadly self-protection.”

County Coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, however, said a bullet slug recovered from Robinson’s body was made of lead.

A Butler County judge in December had revoked a $20,000 bond posted by Liberty Bail Bonds after Robinson failed to appear in court on charges of receiving stolen property. Robinson was arrested in August by Zelienople police, who found him sleeping in a car reported stolen from his former girlfriend.

Liberty Bail Bonds, based Downtown, hired Smith and McKay to hunt down Robinson. They found him in a North Side house that had no electricity, and a confrontation occurred in a dark room. McKay thought Robinson was armed and fired once, investigators said.

Police later discovered that Robinson, whose last known address was in Zelienople, did not have a weapon.

Bail-bond agencies sometimes employ people to track down defendants who skip out on bail bonds. Such workers are called bail bondsmen, skip tracers or fugitive-recovery agents. They are derisively called bounty hunters by some people.

Police said officers were dispatched at 6:59 p.m. Dec. 23 to help the two bail bondsmen who were trying to serve a fugitive warrant on Robinson.

Officers found Robinson on the floor bleeding heavily. The officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived but were unable to revive him. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:28 p.m.

The shooting sparked a dispute between Wecht and District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr.

Zappala’s office filed a series of court petitions in January asking Manning to quash subpoenas that Wecht’s office issued in anticipation of conducting open inquests into the death of Robinson and the Nov. 9 police shooting in Wilkins of Eugene Aiello, 31, of Turtle Creek.

The district attorney contends Wecht was overstepping his authority — as outlined in the second-class county code — by probing killings already under investigation by prosecutors, who ultimately decide whether criminal charges are warranted. By Michael Hasch TRIBUNE-REVIEW
